Proving what we believe biblically

By André Price

Many professing Christians will hear Christ say, "I never knew you" in judgement. Why is this so? A simple answer is that many neglect, ignore, or fail to obey the Word of God while professing to believe it and trusting in performing religious works in God's name.

Matthew 7:21-27 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
Eph 2:8-9
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Christ prophesied that many, not a few, will be deceived into being false believers. This should alarm every believer and make us want to study scripture diligently to learn how and why this will happen so that we can avoid it happening to us. The good news is that we are instructed by the Word of God on how to assure oursleves that we are doing His will and avoid becoming a cast away. The most prominent reason people fail to do God's will is by falling into the habbit of not proving what we believe biblically. When we do what we believe is the will of God without proving that it is the will of God, we become conduits and repositories of false teachings doing the will of the god of this world and not the God of creation. Satan, the god of this world, counters God's will by luring his converts through the lust of the flesh and lust for riches (mammon). The God of creation measures our love by obedience to His Word for which we will receive rewards of eternal riches that are vastly greater than anything this world has to offer.

Mr 8:36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
Lu 16:13
No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
1Ti 6:9
But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
1Ti 6:10
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
1Ti 6:17
Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;
Mt 6:19-21
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Joh 12:25
He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.
Rev 12:10-11
And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

How is it that we are to become knowledgeable of the Word of God? There is a common belief or presumption that it is a biblical norm that someone must avail themselves to teach the Word of God at a convenient time for a busy group who otherwise would not find the time to study the Bible on their own. This belief does not hold up scripturally and is the reason why so many professing Christians are unconsciously gullible to false teachings. Solely relying on others to tell us what's in the Bible discourages our communing directly with God, seeking to understand and knowing Him personally, learning obedience, and worshiping Him in spirit and in truth.

1Jo 2:26-27 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you. But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
Joh 17:17
Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
Joh 4:23
But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

Preachers and teachers serve a purpose in the body of Christ especially for outreach to new converts and babes in Christ needing to be taught fundamentals but they are not meant to replace a personal relationship with God. Ministers in the faith are commanded to study and ready themselves to reprove, rebuke, and exhort without straying from the Bible.

2Ti 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
1Ti 1:4
Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.
1Ti 4:7
But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.
Tit 1:14
Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.
2Pe 1:16
For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

The goal for every believer is to become teachers of the Word of God; not to remain perpetual babes in Christ ever being taught.

Hebrews 5:12-14 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Christians are instructed to prove all things, study, and search the scriptures. By actively doing so, we learn to fear God, obey His will, and how to discern good and evil and the biblical validity of doctrine presented by others.

1Th 5:21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
Joh 5:39
Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
2Ti 2:15
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

In the book of Acts, it was considered noble to have an open mind to hearing teachings about God while at the same time proving or verifying what was said is biblical.

Acts 17:10-11 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

There is also real danger over widespread acceptance of doctrines of devils. Scripture warned us that we would face this situation which we must overcome if we are serious about obeying Christ and entering His kingdom.

Ro 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
1Ti 4:1
Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
1Jo 5:4
For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

Apostle Paul made no exception when he instructed us to reject anyone whose teachings do not conform to what is written in the Bible.

Galatians 1:6-12 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ. But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Traditions of men, a system of beliefs and practices passed down from generation to generation, has a profound effect that reinforces an unwillingness to conform to the Word of God; especially when traditions are falsely attributed to God and offer spiritual gratifications.

Mark 7:5-9 Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands? He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.

It does not matter how much we say we love God; our love for Him will not be measured in words but by our obedience to Him.

Isa 29:13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:
Joh 14:15
If ye love me, keep my commandments.
Joh 14:23
Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
Rev 3:14-22
And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

Christians, in this day and age, have no excuse for not being fully equip with the Word of God. We have printed Bibles, audio Bibles, searchable computer Bibles, laptops, portable multimedia devices, online Bibles, Google search, searchable concordances, Church history, biblical references, and etc. The early Church had hand written letters delivered and read aloud in person before gatherings from place to place.

Eph 6:11-18 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

The more we engage ourselves in studying and hearing the word of God audibly, the more we are made aware of our shortcomings and sins. This conviction should be welcomed as the loving hand of God and followed by repentance. It can feel painful at times but never should we choose to reject the chastening of the Lord.

Heb 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Heb 12:7
If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
Heb 12:11
Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

Christianity has a history that is important to know as part of building a strong foundation in the faith separated from tradition of men. There are critical events involving paganism and Christianity that occurred since the early Church. The Bible warns about this as the falling away from Christ. It is a prevailing truth that is now globally entrenched.

2Th 2:1-4 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
